My First Baptism of Fire as a reporter at the Lagos House of Assembly

Hon. Oluwafemi Adebanjo is presently a two-term member of the House of Representatives in Abuja, representing the good people of the Alimosho Federal Constituency.
Before that, he was the Chairman of the Alimosho Local Government Council twice.
He was also a member of the Class of 1999-2003( 4th Legislative Assembly), of Lagos State House of Assembly.
It was there I first met him and my first meeting with him was certainly not a pleasant one.
I had written about his sizzling romantic affairs with a beautiful young lady then and forgotten about it.
I didn’t know he had been looking for me until this beautiful afternoon while walking down the corridor of the member’s wing sniffing for news, as usual, I saw him walking towards me.
Before I could exchange greetings as I usually do with all members, he called out my name and accused me of wanting to wreck his marriage.
He said before I wreck his marriage he would deal with me both physically and spiritually, aside from being an Ijebu man, he was also a member of the Oodua People’s Congress ( OPC), a dreaded organization then.
But when I responded to his outbursts in the Ijebu dialect, he was shocked and immediately asked me about my hometown in Ijebuland. I told him Ijebu-Ode and he said we are from this same town. That was how we became friends till the present moment.
” How did you get to know about Tolani Abatti? I asked in my book, ‘Two Decades of Lagos House of Assembly: Face To Face With the Movers and Shakers.”
” It was after you did a story about my relationship with a lady. I started looking for you. I was told you were the correspondent of Encomium Magazine in the Assembly. If I had seen you that day, I would have punched you. When we eventually met, I discovered that we are from the same town of Ijebu-Ode.” He responded.
“How did you know about the story? Did you buy Encomium (Magazine ) or did somebody tell you? I asked again in my book.
” It was some member’s wives who bought your magazine, then told their husbands and their husbands called me. Even though you wrote Senbanjo in your story, everybody knew you were referring to me. It was that ‘error’ I capitalized on to defend myself when my wife challenged me. I asked her, did you see my name there? Is it not Senbanjo that was written there?”
