THE Senate on Wednesday suspended its sitting in honour of late member of House of Representatives, Olajide Akinremi, popularly known as Jagaban.
The lawmaker had passed away in the early hours of Wednesday following a brief illness.
Until his death, Akinremi represented Ibadan North Federal Constituency in Oyo State.
As its tradition, the Senate shortly after convening for the day’ s plenary, suspended its sitting and adjourned till Thursday 11th July, 2024.
The President of the Senate, Godswill Akpabio who announced the demise of the lawmaker, commiserated with the family members.
He said, “With sadness in my heart, I would like to announce the demise of Honourable Olajide Akinremi. His death occurred at the early hours of today after a very brief illness.
“On behalf of the Senate, we condole with the members of the family, the Speaker of the House and the members of the House of Representatives.”
The Leader of the Senate Senator Opeyemi Bamidele, APC, Ekiti Central thereafter moved that the Senate suspends its activities for the day in honour of the late lawmaker.
Bamidele said, “In line with our existing traditions, I feel very sad to move that the Senate does suspend its legislative activities for today and all activities on the order papar be stepped down to another legislative day.”
This was seconded by the Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro, PDP, Benue South.
Following this motion, the Senate held a minute silence in honour of the late lawmaker and subsequently adjourned.
